Having fun with my cash envelopes system
It’s been difficult to find time to post lately. Luckily I have been able to pick up lots of overtime at one of my job’s which includes shifts as long as 16 hours!! Yeay!!!
Mr. BigTime and I decided to adapt Dave Ramsey’s idea of the cash envelopes system over a year ago when we started budgeting our money. We have been using cash for certain categories and we love it! The categories in our cash envelope system are:
- Household supplies (Paper towels, toilet papers, cleaning supplies)
- Dining Out
- Laundry (Laundry detergent, fabric softener, dry cleaning)
- Toiletries (deodorant, soap, lotion, moisturizer, makeup, etc.)
- Blow money (we give each other about $20 cash that we can spend on anything we want. Since I am a little heffer, I usually end up eating that money somehow on Tommy’s, ice cream, coffee, etc., you get the point.)
At the end of every month Mr. BigTime and I decide on how much we will spend the following month on each category. For example, last month we needed to budget enough money to buy paper towels and toilet paper since we were almost out. So why use the cash envelope system? Because there will always be a finite amount of money. We used to have a big problem. We would walk into Costco and purchase $200 worth of stuff when all we really needed was milk. Using cash for these categories allows us to buy only what we need and even get creative on saving money by using coupons and rebates when available. We decided on the above mentioned categories because most are items that we can purchase from one trip to Costco. For Christmas last year, Mr. Bigtime and my mother-in-law teamed up to make me my very own cash envelope system. Mr. BigTime picked out the fabrics for each individual category and my mother-in-law made it!!! It was such an awesome gift! My sister-in-law is working on creating her own cash envelope systems for sale, please email me if interested in purchasing one.
