Frugal tips for Paris

March 20, 2012

Nurse Frugal loves Paris! A few years ago, Mr. Bigtime and I were lucky enough to go on a month long European vacation.  The first 3 days we were there we spent in Paris!  We went before we implemented our budget, however I knew that I wanted to spend as little as possible.  Here are some of the things we did to save some dinero:

1. We pricelined our hotel stay.  About a month before we left, I booked our hotel room in Paris for an excellent price for a three star hotel.  If any of you have been to Paris before, you know that only in your dreams can you get a room for under $100 a night.  We are big fans of the priceline method where you put in your information and make a bid on a hotel.  It was a little scary not knowing what hotel we would be staying at until the website accepted or rejected our bid, but now it’s part of the adventure.

2. We went to the musems for free!! I planned to go to both, The Louvre and the Musee D’Orsay on the first of the month, because entrance is free.  Yes, there will possibly be a zoo of people, and it is a lot to see in one day, but if you only have 3 days to see Paris, it can be done and for free!

3. We used the wonderful public transportation that Paris has to offer!  It can be a little confusing at first; you may have an angry Parisian or two waiting behind you, and you might end up in the complete opposite direction you were hoping for, but this too can be done!  We stuck out like sore thumbs, so most people already knew we were Americans 😉 We ended up meeting some really nice people along the way. After you get the hang of it, it is quite fun and inexpensive.  I did some research ahead of time and we ended up purchasing the passes that were good for 10 trips, and it worked out quite nicely!
